Mountaineers Fall to #19
Not much to talk about here. The Mountaineers fall to #19 in the BCS poll after their tough loss to Kansas State. Next up are the TCU Horned Frogs, who come to Mountaineer Field Nov. 3rd. Let’s Go Mountaineers! Time to rebound!!
Bruce Irvin Interview on MNF
I always knew Bruce Irvin was a great Mountaineer, but I didn’t know about the journey he took to get there. In case you missed it, check out this interview with ESPN’s Rick Reilly. I’ve always loved Reilly’s work, but, he didn’t win any points with me by referring to WVU as the “University of West Virginia”. Come on, Rick. You cover golf a lot. Would you call the PGA the “Association of Pro Golf”??
Mountaineers Stay At #7, Slide to #9
WVU didn’t move a spot this week in the national Coaches Poll, but dropped back to #9 in the AP Poll. The Mountaineers 31-21 victory over Maryland wasn’t impressive enough for the voters/journalists of the AP. If you don’t win by 70 they don’t think you’re good! Bring on Baylor!!
Mountaineers Hold Off Maryland
Those gray skies and new gray uniforms weren’t the only things to watch at Milan Puskar Stadium on Saturday afternoon. A young Maryland team, led by freshman QB Perry Hills, gave the Mountaineers a run for their money. After going out to an early 14-0 lead, the Mountaineers let the Terps back into the game; it was 14 all midway through the 2nd quarter. Then the Mountaineers rolled off 10 points to take the lead and the momentum into halftime, 24-14.
WVU really had control of the game from that point on. Geno Smiths 34 yard TD pass to Tavon Austin was a beautiful thing, putting them up 31-14 midway through the 4th quarter. Just when you thought there was breathing room, Maryland comes back with a 56 yard score from Hills to Stefon Diggs to make it 31-21. WVU holds on to make that the final score, with Smith finishing 30-43 for 338 yards and 3 TD’s, but the Terps may have exposed some weaknesses in the Mountaineers defense. Here’s hoping corrections can be made before facing the meat of their Big 12 schedule next month.
The Mountaineers face Baylor next week to open the above mentioned Big 12 portion of their season. Game time is noon in Morgantown!!
